MISSIOLOGY IN AFRICA: MY VIEWPOINT

Archbishop Makarios of Kenya The thought of mission work in Africa, to many people, was, in the past, a dreadful thought, what with the many cases of disease, the hardships and the scorching sun of the continent south of the Sahara, not to mention the dangers from wild animals? For the fainthearted, this was a real and genuine worry. By this I don’t want to imply that all those missionaries who ventured into the heart of Africa were daring and adventurous, without concern for their wellbeing. No, it takes a conviction deeper than just sheer adventure to leave behind everything you hold dear and take the gospel of Christ to the unknown. It takes the power of the Holy and Life-giving Spirit. It would not be true to imply that I was ready for the mission to Africa. For instance, I had only heard of jiggers from stories, yet they gave me a resounding welcome. From the long distances covered on foot, to the cultural shock and the language barrier, the only solace for a missionary in a foreign land is the simplicity of the African setting.
